DOT PHYSICAL

A DOT physical is a health exam required by the Department of Transportation to make sure commercial drivers are healthy and safe to operate large vehicles. During the visit, a certified medical examiner checks vision, hearing, blood pressure, and overall physical health. A simple urine test is done to screen for conditions like diabetes or kidney problems (not drugs). Drivers should bring their photo ID, a list of medications, and any corrective lenses or hearing aids they use. If they pass, they receive a medical certificate that’s usually valid for up to two years.

19A PHYSICAL

A 19A physical is a medical exam required by New York State for anyone who operates certain types of vehicles, such as school buses, paratransit vans, or other passenger vehicles under the state’s Article 19-A program. The exam ensures that drivers are physically and mentally fit to transport passengers safely. A certified medical provider checks vision, hearing, blood pressure, and overall health, similar to a DOT physical. Drivers must bring identification, a list of any medications, and any corrective lenses or hearing aids they use. Once passed, the physical is valid for one year and must be renewed annually to maintain driving certification
