A Medical Review Officer (MRO) is a licensed physician responsible for reviewing and verifying drug test results for DOT-regulated testing programs. Each MRO must complete specialized training and pass an exam administered by a nationally recognized MRO certification board to ensure they are qualified to interpret and manage complex drug testing information. The MRO’s role is to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the testing process by evaluating laboratory results, considering legitimate medical explanations for positive findings, and protecting the confidentiality of employee health information. If a test result is positive, the MRO contacts the employee to determine whether there is a valid prescription or medical reason before reporting the final result to the employer. This process maintains fairness, accuracy, and compliance within the DOT drug testing program.
Why is an MRO Important:
When a Medical Review Officer (MRO) determines that a legitimate medical explanation exists for a “positive” drug test result, the MRO will overturn the laboratory’s initial finding and report the final result to the employer as “negative.” While some companies may choose not to invest in MRO services to reduce costs, these services significantly enhance the accuracy, reliability, and credibility of the drug testing process. They also promote fairness for the donor and provide important legal protection for employers in the event of disputes or claims of wrongful suspension or termination related to a “positive” test result.
